What to do when you get an Income Tax Notice

The first step: Do not panic!

Notices from the Income Tax Department are scarier than the marksheet we received during our school days. Even though the first reaction in both cases is one of panic, tax notices have a way of seeming very ominous. But tax notices are not always bad. There can be a fortunate tax notice as well to tell you about a refund you will receive.

However, it is true that most tax notices can put the receiver in a stressful situation. This is why the first thing you should do when you receive a tax notice is carefully check and verify the details. At times, the notice may go out to the wrong taxpayer.

But if the tax notice is addressed to you, it could be for any one of the following common reasons:

  • Problem with your TDS claims
  • Non-filing of income tax returns
  • Need to verify your documents or scrutinize your returns
  • Income not reported
  • TDS deduction on purchase of property

There could be other reasons behind receiving a tax notice as well. But in any case, you don’t need to worry. We have introduced an Upload Notice Facility that you can use to have your tax notice resolved within 24 hours.

All you have to do is upload the PDF file of the tax notice you have received and enter in your details. Our experts will review this notice and get back to you with possible resolutions within 24 hours. And, we’ll do this for free.

A word of caution: Never ignore a notice from the income tax department. The tax department imposes fines on tax assessees who do not respond to tax notices. It is best to get them reviewed by our experts and then respond properly to them.
